Marvel Studios has recently found itself in hot waters because of the controversial sacking of Beau DeMayo, who was one of the creators and lead writers for “X-Men ’97”. Marvel made that announcement in March 2024 after conducting an internal review on “appalling” behaviour. At first, it appeared like Season 1 and 2 were a success for DeMayo, but things took a turn for the worse rather fast.
Following his firing, DeMayo took to social media, accusing Marvel of stripping his Season 2 writing credits due to a gay pride post. He shared a shirtless photo, styled as Cyclops, during Pride Month and expressed frustration over Marvel’s decision, claiming a pattern of mistreatment while working on other projects like "Blade."
Marvel swiftly responded to DeMayo's accusations, stating his credits were removed due to repeated breaches of his termination agreement, not because of his pride post. Marvel cited sexual misconduct as a key factor in his dismissal, emphasising that the evidence found during the investigation was serious and necessitated immediate action.
In response, DeMayo called Marvel’s claims misleading. He denied their allegations and suggested that the studio was attempting to distract from their recent struggles with Disney+. DeMayo hinted that the “truth” would eventually come to light, asking fans to stay tuned for further developments.
Before he left, DeMayo worked on both seasons one and two of X-Men ‘97 which is a reboot praised for its audacious narrative and intricate characters. However, even after being fired from the project his efforts in the show are still being commended with numerous fans looking forward to seeing them in the Emmy worthy series.
Aside from "X-Men '97," DeMayo contributed to other Marvel projects, including "Moon Knight" and the highly anticipated "Blade" movie. Known for his presence on social media, DeMayo built a reputation as an outspoken and proud gay writer, even running a non-explicit OnlyFans account, which drew attention from media outlets like Out Magazine.
As the controversy unfolds, fans are left wondering what the future holds for both Beau DeMayo and Marvel Studios. With tensions high and more revelations likely to surface, the story is far from over. For now, DeMayo continues to tease his side of the story, promising that "the truth will be revealed.
