In September, some Social Security beneficiaries will not get benefit checks.

Millions of people who receive social security payments will not be able to get their benefit check this month because of an anomaly related to the calendar. This problem is affecting those people who are beneficiaries of this program known as supplemental security income, or SSI for short, which assists elderly individuals with little income and disabled adults.

It does not mean that quirk is a recent phenomenon because the Social Security Administration prepares its yearly payment date well ahead of time. This month’s absence of a payment may still catch some people off guard and leave them unprepared or unaware about the change in scheduling.

The checks for SSI recipients are usually received on the first day of every month. However, since this year September 1 fell on a Sunday, the payments for SSI were mailed out on Friday August 30. That means next month’s SSI checks will go into your account on Tuesday October 1 with no deposits made in September.

According to Social Security data, approximately 7.5 million people receive SSI benefits, with a maximum monthly benefit for an individual of $943; meanwhile, the average payment for Social Security retirement benefits stands at $1,907 per month.

The second week’s deposits, in terms of days, are as follows: September 11: Individuals born during the first ten days of this month, September 18: For persons who were born from the eleventh to twentieth of September, September 25: Those born between twenty one and thirty first September

“We’re going to make sure that the application is less burdensome and more accessible than it currently is, for people in our communities who require this important safety net,” said Martin O’Malley, Commissioner of Social Security in a statement.

The very first rollout will target those who are 18 to 65 years of age and have never been married before; these will also come from among those applying for social security benefits as well as SSi (the agency noted this). The next phase which is expected to take place in late 2025 will involve all SSi applicants.
